Cultural Triangle, Hill Country, Galle Beach & Colombo (15 nights)

Flights: Return flights from London Heathrow airport to Sri Lanka on Oman via Muscat.

DAY 01 ARRIVE COLOMBO AIRPORT TRANSFER / NEGOMBO

Met on arrival at the Bandaranayke International by our representative & transfer to the beach resort of Negombo, which is less than 30 minutes from the airport.

Check in at the Beach Hotel 5* (Deluxe Room) - Rest of the day at leisure - dinner & overnight stay at Hotel.

The beach hotel is situated on a wide sandy beach in the heart of Negombo. Offering stylish, contemporary accommodation, the hotel was designed by renowned Sri Lankan architect Jeffrey Bawa. With 75 deluxe rooms, this is a large boutique resort and with a spa, and great facilities to unwind after your flight and settle in to first class Sri Lankan hospitality.

DAY 02 NEGOMBO

Breakfast at hotel - rest of the day at leisure, with the opportunity to explore the local village of Negombo, or relax on the beach. Negombo is a thriving fishing community and a wonder through the village will find the local fish market, selling last night’s catch. Dozen’s of small Catholic churches are dotted around the community which offers a true cultural blend of Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism and Islam, reflecting the wider Sri Lankan community. Dinner & overnight stay at the hotel.

DAY 03 NEGOMBO / PINNAWELA / SIGIRIYA

Breakfast at hotel - Leave for Sigiriya, En route visit the Elephant Orphanage in Pinnawela - This orphanage is the home for about 60 elephants, out of which some are baby elephants found abandoned or orphaned in the wild. They are being cared, fed and trained by the wild life authorities The best time to visit is to coincide with feeding time, when baby elephants are bottled fed, followed by the elephants walking through the village for a session of bathing & fun in the river. On completion proceed to the Cultural Triangle and Sigiriya.

Check in at Vil Uyana 5* - (Paddy / Marsh Dwelling Room) - Rest of the day at leisure - stay at the hotel.

Vil Uyana, in the heart of the Cultural Triangle is without a doubt one of the best hotels in Sri Lanka. Set just only 5 kilometers from Sigiriya Rock Fortress, 25 individual thatched roof chalets are set on a pattern of raised pathways above lake and paddy fields. The paddy field dwellings and two of the march dwellings have private plunge pools. There is fine dining, an infinity pool an Ayurvedic centre and spa. This is a perfect location for those seeking a peaceful, luxurious place to stay.

DAY 04 SIGIRIYA / POLONNARUWA / SIGIRIYA

Breakfast at hotel – Proceed on a sightseeing tour of Polonnaruwa - which was the 2nd capital city of Sri Lanka, built in the 11th and 12th centuries AD, and which is a world heritage site - Here you can see the ruins of the Royal Palace, the Gal Viharaya – where 4 splendid statues of the Buddha in ‘Upright’, ‘Sedentary’ and ‘Recumbent’ postures are carved out of rock, the Audience Hall, the Lotus Bath, King Parakramabahu’s statue, and the Parakrama Samudraya lake built by King Parakramabahu the great. There are also monuments of famous places of worship such as the Shiva Temple, the Lankathilake, the Watadage, the Galpotha, the Kiri Vehera and the remains of a former Temple of the Tooth Relic.

On completion return back to the hotel - rest of the day at leisure - dinner & overnight stay at the hotel.

Late afternoon - option of a Jeep Safari to see elephants in one of the close-by National Parks.

DAY 05 SIGIRIYA / ANURADHAPURA / DAMBULLA / SIGIRIYA

Breakfast at hotel - Morning proceed to Anuradhapura - It was the first capital and undoubtedly the grandest city of the ancient Sri Lanka, It is the home of two World Heritage sites. Many places of historical and archaeological interest can be visited. Sri Maha Bodhi (Sacred Bo-Tree) was brought as a sapling of the tree under which prince Siddhartha attained to enlightenment and it is over 2,200 years old and is the oldest historically documented tree in the world. At Brazen Palace (2nd century B.C), the 1600 stone columns you see are all that is left of a magnificent multi-storied residence for monks. Ruwanweliseya (2nd century B.C) is the most famous of all the Dagobas. It originally depicted the perfect 'bubble shape' that modern restoration has not been able to accurately reproduce. Samadhi' Buddha statue (4th century AD) is one of the most famous statues, depicting the Buddha in a state of 'Samadhi' or deep meditation. Isurumuniya rock temple (3rd century B.C) is well known for its rock carvings of 'The Lovers'. Kuttam Pokuna - twin ponds (6th century AD) were used by the Buddhist monks as a bathing pool. Thuparama Dagoba (3rd century B.C) is the oldest Dagoba in the island, which enshrines the right collarbone of the Buddha.

Proceed to visit Mihintale, where Buddhism was first introduced to Sri Lanka. On this rock are many shrines and dwellings originally used by monks. A grand stairway of 1,840 steps made of 15 feet wide granite slabs leads to the summit from where one could get a splendid view of the surrounding countryside. Thereafter proceed to Dambulla - climb up to the temple, which was donated by king Walagambahu in the 1st century BC to Buddhist monks. Dambulla is a World Heritage site and is the most impressive of Sri Lanka's cave temples. The complex of five caves with over 2000 sq. meters of painted walls and the ceiling is the largest area of paintings found in the world. These caves contain over 150 images of the Buddha of which the largest is the colossal figure of the Buddha carved out of rock spanning 14 meters.

DAY 06 SIGIRIYA / KANDY

Breakfast at hotel - Morning proceed to climb the 5th century Sigiriya rock fortress which is a world heritage site, built by King Kashyapa (477-495 AD). The 'Lion Rock' is a citadel of unusual beauty rising 200 meters from the scrub jungle. The rock was the innermost stronghold of the 70 hectare fortified town. A moat, rampart, and extensive gardens including the renowned water gardens ring the base of the rock. Visit the world-renowned frescoes of the 'Heavenly Maidens' of Sigiriya, which are in a sheltered pocket of the rock approached by a spiral stairway. These frescoes are painted in earth pigments on plaster. On completion leave for Kandy. If preferred the visit to the rock fortress can be combined with day 4 or day 5.

Afternoon proceed on a Sightseeing tour of Kandy - Kandy was the last capital of the Sri Lankan kings, and is a World Heritage Site. The name Kandy conjures visions of splendor and magnificence. Many of the legends, traditions and folklore are still lovingly kept alive. Drive around the Kandy Lake built by the last Sinhala king Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe in 1798. Visit the Kandy town and Bazaar, the arts & crafts centre and a gem museum and a lapidary. In the evening visit the Temple of the Tooth Relic and thereafter witness a cultural show featuring traditional Sri Lankan dancing.

Return to hotel for overnight stay.

DAY 07 KANDY

Morning proceed to visit the Peradeniya Royal Botanical Gardens - This botanical garden was first built as a pleasure garden by a Sinhala king and was expanded by the British during the period of colonial rule. It is 147 acres in extent and provides an amazing variety of trees, plants and flowers.

On completion return back to the hotel - rest of the day at leisure - overnight stay at the hotel.
 

DAY 08 KANDY / HATTON

Breakfast at hotel – Leave for Hatton passing through the heartland of the Sri Lankan tea country with breath taking views and a journey back into the bygone era of colonial tea plantations.

Check in at Ceylon Tea Trails 5* (Luxury Room) - rest of the day at leisure - lunch, dinner & overnight stay at the hotel.

Ceylon Tea Trails is a collection of four bungalows built for the British tea estate managers in the days of the Raj. Each has been beautifully restored and offer between four and six bedrooms. Each room and bungalow is individually designed in a traditional style. Two bungalows have swimming pools, there is croquet, tennis, mountain biking and gentle walks through the estate. A great opportunity to learn more about tea, be indulged with great food, on an all inclusive basis and take in the stunning views.

DAY 09 HATTON

Breakfast at hotel - Rest of the day at leisure to explore the vicinity - lunch, dinner & overnight stay at the hotel.

DAY 10 HATTON / KOGGALA

Breakfast at hotel - Leave for Koggala on the South West Coast, 15 minutes south of the historic town of Galle.

Check in at the Fortress Hotel 5* (Ocean Room) - rest of the day at leisure on the beach - overnight stay at the hotel.

The Fortress is a first class deluxe hotel, and offers some of the best beach accommodation available anywhere in Sri Lanka. Combing historic Dutch and Portuguese architecture the hotel offers ultra modern bedrooms and stunning bathrooms in a chic contemporary style. Cuisine at the Fortress is fantastic with a great choice of food and dining options. DAY 11-13 KOGGALA

Breakfast at hotel - rest of the day at leisure on the beach - overnight stay at the hotel.

We recommend a visit to the historic town of Galle during your stay at the fortress. The hotel will be happy to arrange a car a driver locally or we can pre arrange this if preferred.

Galle is set on a dramatic rugged coastline. The Galle walled fort is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a wonder through the streets, with the buildings dominated by Dutch architecture is a marvelous way to spend a few hours.

DAY 14 KOGGALA / COLOMBO

Breakfast at hotel - leave for Colombo, following the coast road.

Check in at the Park Street Hotel 5* (Deluxe Room) - rest of the day at leisure with an opportunity for shopping in Colombo. Overnight stay at the hotel.

Colombo is the vibrant and cosmopolitan capital city of Sri Lanka and offers the opportunity for sight seeing, shopping and a wide variety of dinning out options to suit all tastes and very reasonable prices.

Drive time: 4 Hours

DAY 15 COLOMBO / DEPARTURE TRANSFER

Leave for the airport to connect with the departure flight. Typically the transfer will take one hour.
